Research funding plays a pivotal role in shaping the trajectory of academic pursuits, particularly in fields aimed at addressing pressing global challenges such as sustainability. Xabier Barriola, a post-doctoral researcher at INSEAD's Sustainable Business Initiative (SBI), sheds light on the significance of research funding through his journey and projects.

Originally from Venezuela, Xabier's academic journey led him to pursue a PhD in Management from IESE Business School in Barcelona, focusing on sustainability—a passion stemming from his prior experience as an environmental consultant. His work involved ensuring companies adhered to ethical environmental practices, a task vital for safeguarding both ecosystems and communities.

Xabier's experience underscores the critical need for rigorous oversight and sustainable practices, particularly in regions where environmental exploitation can be rampant. His transition from consulting to academia reflects a commitment to delve deeper into these issues and contribute meaningfully to solutions.

Since joining INSEAD in 2022, Xabier found a platform to amplify his research impact. Collaborating closely with companies like Polygreen, a company focusing on circular economy services and waste management systems, he embarked on projects aimed at pioneering sustainable solutions. One such endeavour involved transforming the small Greek island of Tilos into a zero-waste community.

"Research funding not only sustains the livelihood of researchers but also fuels innovative projects that have tangible societal benefits." - Xabier Barriola

However, Xabier emphasises that such impactful research endeavours hinge on adequate funding. For Xabier and his team, funding enabled them to engage in comprehensive studies, forge partnerships with industry stakeholders, and propose scalable solutions.

Moreover, Xabier's journey exemplifies the interconnectedness of academia and industry. Collaborations with industry not only enrich research endeavours but also facilitate the implementation of sustainable practices in real-world settings. This symbiotic relationship underscores the importance of funding not only in generating knowledge but also in driving meaningful change beyond academic realms.

As Xabier prepares to transition to Tilburg University as an assistant professor, he plans to continue teaching and researching in sustainability. Xabier's trajectory epitomises the ripple effects of funding—nurturing talent, fostering innovation, and catalysing societal transformation.  As academia continues to confront global issues, sustained investment in research funding remains paramount for shaping a more sustainable future.
